For whom the Bells toil...
At a recent Intercessory Group Meeting at St. Francis of Assisi in the Waterkloof Anglican Parish, it became evident that many members had been directly or indirectly affected by criminal activities in the community. A discussion ensued as to how Christians could make a real difference to our country as individuals and as a community.
During this meeting an idea was born which it is hoped will be adopted by all churches in South Africa.
This idea was that at noon each day, Church Bells across the country would ring to remind us to pray for both the victims and perpetrators of crime.
The idea is very similar to that of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who in 1981, asked members of all faiths to meet the "darkness" with a daily prayer for peace. The people were asked to give one minute to it either vocally or meditatively.
The Venerable Timothy Lowes, the Rector of St. Francis and Anglican Archdeacon of Pretoria East, has given his blessing to this idea and has agreed to a team of volunteers contacting other churches across the City of Tshwane and the rest of the country to harness the power of prayer in the
'Minute of Prayer at Noon Against Crime'.
We are hoping that the ringing of the bells will focus the community of believer's minds on prayer and raise our nation's plea for peace.
For those involved in Security - they will know that they are in our prayers and draw strength from this, for the victims - we hope that they will be comforted that a nation of believers is praying for them, for the perpetrators - perhaps their consciences will be touched by the reminder of the power and presence of God and that in all these dimensions, change can be brought about in our society.
We also feel that the church bells should announce our Christian commitment to positive change in South Africa, driven by faith and the power of focussed, mass prayer.
